Borderlands PDP organized a Staff Retreat Program for the staff of World Bank Nepal from November 22-25, 2009 at Mirabel Resort, Dhulikhel. A total of 80 people took part in the Staff Retreat that included World Bank’s internal sessions as well. The participants enthusiastically participated in the various games and initiatives. Magic stick, electric fence, rescue the trapped people and chain gang were some of the games that were played during the retreat.

Speaking during and after the program, the participants said that the program was a fun-filled event yet it also focused on experiential learning. They further said that they understood each other better and also felt that the retreat was successful in increasing their trust amongst each other, verbal and non-verbal communication, team work, leadership skills, planning and implementation and coordination among other things. There was active participation during the program and the participants said that the learning could very well be applied to their day-to-day work.

Leadership Development Program-British School

A Leadership Development Program was organized for Grade 6 students of the British School from November 23-27, 2009 at the Borderlands Eco Adventure Resort. A total of 13 students and 3 teachers participated in the five days program. To make the experiential learning more effective, the whole group was further sub-divided into smaller groups of 6-7 participants. The first day included icebreaking activities, hiking to Gati village and camping during the night. Similarly, on the second day the students walked to the Seti Devi Primary School and donated some books for the library. In addition, they also dug pits for tree plantation. Other games and initiatives that were played during the program were: nightline exercise, raising group performance, leaky pipes, diffuse the bomb, data transfer etc. As per the participants, rock climbing, abseiling, river crossing, a visit to the paper factory, fashion show and talent show were some of the highlights of the trip. The students as well as teachers enthusiastically made Nepali paper with their own hands and brought it with them.

Overall, the program was considered to be a huge success as the participants actively participated in all the activities and learnt a lot from the games and initiatives. Some of the key learnings were: leadership skills, trust, improved communication (verbal and non-verbal), planning and coordination and team work among other things.

Nature-treks.com organized the Gokyo Valley and Everest Base Camp Adventure, the ultimate adventure in Nepal, from November 3 to 19, 2009 for a group of 6 English people. The main highlights of this ultimate adventure trip were: the visit to the base camp of the highest mountain on Earth, four peaks over eight thousand meters (Everest, Cho Oyo, Lhotse and Makalu), Gokyo Ri: the amazing view point of Gokyo valley, the high pass Chola, Kalapathar (5545m), Khumbu Icefall, the most spectacular mountain of this area: Ama Dablam along with views of other Himalayan ranges and the age-old monasteries of Thyangboche and Khumjung.

The 21 days trip started with a sightseeing tour and hikes before the trekkers flew to Lukla. The scenic flight was followed by an easy hike to Phakdingma (2600 m). After entering the Sagarmatha national park at Monjo, the steep ascent lead to the famous Namche Bazaar. En route, the trekkers enjoyed the sights and sounds of birds like White-browed Fulveta and the Black-faced Laughing thrushes. A day at Namche Bazaar was followed by a steep ascent to Shyangboche that lead to Dole (4100 m). After spending a day each in Machhermo (4400 m), Gokyo (4790 m), Gokyo Ri (5360 m), Thangna (4680 m), Jongla (4800 m) and Labuche (4900m), they reached Gorakshep and continued on to the Everest Base Camp (5200 m). The trekkers returned to Gorakshep to spend the night. An early morning hike up to Kalapathar (5545 m) on the 14th day ensured amazing sunrise views. Kalapathar is the southern ridge of Mt. Pumori (7200m) and the view of Mount Everest is closest from Kalapathar which is very awe-inspiring. The trekkers then retraced their steps via Dugla to Dingboche (4400 m). Trekking to Chhukung valley was the plan for the next day that brought the trekkers closer to Imja Tse, a popular trekking peak. The trekkers reached Pangboche and Thyangboche on the 16th day and returned to Namche Bazaar where they spent the night in a lodge. The adventurous and remarkable trek came to an end with a trek to Lukla and then a flight back to Kathmandu. The trekkers enjoyed a free day in Kathmandu before flying off to London. This was undoubtedly the experience of a life time!

This 21 days trip to the Everest Base Camp includes 16 days of trekking with a moderate to strenuous grade. The highest point is the Kalapathar (5545 m). The trek starts from and ends at Lukla. Some of the fauna that can be sighted on this trip are: Himalayan Thar, Blue Sheep, Musk Deer, Himalayan Mouse Hare (Pica), the very rare and elusive Snow Leopard, Red Panda and Himalayan Black Bears. Himalayan Monal or Danphe the national bird of Nepal, flocks of Grandala, Yellow-billed & Red-billed Choughs, Alpine & Robin Accentors, Tibetan Snow Cock, Yellow-billed Blue Magpie, Laughing Thrushes and many more species of birds can also be seen on this trip.

Borderlands PDP organized a Team Building Event for the Nepal National Football Team on November 20, 2009. A total of 30 participants including 3 coaches and 1 manager actively took part in the program that aimed at enhancing communication, leadership, teamwork, trust, confidence and coordination skills among the national players. In addition to icebreaking games, the first half of the day-long program also witnessed a motivating speech by Mr. Anil Shah, CEO of NABIL Bank. Various games and initiatives focusing on strengthening the team work of the national team were included in the event. Certificate distribution marked the end of the program. ‘Together we can’ was the slogan of the day and it successfully infused the feeling in the Nepal National Football Team that together they can win any match if they work together and support each other. The program was organized at the Gokarna Forest Resort.

The coaches were positive that the program would assist in better performance of the Nepal team when they compete on December 4, 2009 in Bangladesh. The participants said that they thoroughly enjoyed the program and also stated that the lessons learnt while participating in the various games and initiatives would be applied when they compete in the international arena in the future. They also said that the program was unique and very motivating. Reporters from various media houses of the country covered the whole event.

Borderlands Staff Take Part in a Training Program

A day-long Staff Training Program was organized for the staff of the Borderlands Group (Borderlands Resort, Borderlands PDP, Ultimate Descents Nepal and Nature-treks.com) on November 10, 2009 at Hotel Marshyangdi in Thamel. The training program was mainly run by Mr. Wade Campbell, one of the Directors of Borderlands Group, Nepal. He is also the Managing Director of Borderlands Sri Lanka. The program included a couple of games that was aimed at improving awareness, teamwork, communication and synchronization among the Borderlands core team so that they can work together to achieve the organizational goals.

Various power point presentations highlighting Borderlands Sri Lanka’s marketing tactics, the various processes from approaching a client to delivering the services, and what should be offered to potential clients were also discussed during the presentation. A total of 20 managerial staff of the Borderlands Group took part in the program. Strengths and weaknesses of the company were analyzed and solutions to convert those weaknesses into plus points were sought through a brainstorming session. The program also addressed key issues of the adventure tourism industry including the importance of quality and safety. Different suggestions to enhance the company’s brand name and to take the company from good to great were also discussed during the program. In addition, a short presentation by Mr. Megh Ale, Managing Director of the Borderlands Group- Nepal and Mr. Anil Chitrakar, one of the Directors of Borderlands Resort, Nepal was included in the program.

UNICEF takes part in the Borderlands Team Building Program

Six staff from UNICEF- Nepal took part in a Team Building Event organized from November 4-6, 2009 at the Borderlands Eco Adventure Resort. The program, organized by the Borderlands PDP, included some Team Building games and initiatives in addition to fun activities like: mountain biking from Tibet border to the Borderlands Eco Adventure Resort, canyoning, and rafting in the Bhote Koshi River etc. The three-day long program focused on enhancing trust, improving leadership, proper planning and communication among the participants. A debriefing session followed the games and initiatives where the participants shared their learning and also highlighted how the learning can be applied in their workplace.

The program was considered to be a huge success as the participants said that they learnt a lot from the program and enjoyed themselves as well.
